Final Portfolio

For my final portfolio I want to explore the ideas of life standards that society has learned and passed on in an attempt to tell people what they need to do to fit into society. These life standards include but are not limited to house ownership, heterosexual marriage, body standards, and career expectations. These expectations arise from places of white privilege and wealth (amongst other things). I think about these things a lot whenever I am at an art museum or gallery because privilege plays an enormous part in who gets represented in these spaces, in terms of who views the art, who curates the art, and the artists themselves. A lot of artists themselves do not actually fit into traditional life standards, but those who view and choose the art that gets seen often have some amount of privilege. To me, it feels as if those who are rich and fit into these life standards are voyeurs of lives they do not live. I wanted to confront these ideas of power and standards in these pieces and consider why they are expectations in the first place.
